Getting Started With Your Drum Set

I have always wanted to play the drums and thought that drummers were always the coolest part of any rock band.  My favorite part was just letting loose and doing an amazing drum solo that moved everyone in the audience.  Getting started with my first drum set was far from what I had dreamed of.  But, with all instruments I have learned it takes time and practice to get to the level you would like to be at and that is just what I set out to do.

Things To Get for Your First Drum Lesson

Lesson on how to play the drumsJust like every instrument, I always recommend that you either try someone else’s or rent that instrument until you know you want to keep playing.  Drum sets usually take up a lot of room and can be very expensive.  The best recommendation that I have is find someone locally that has a drum set you can practice on for the first few times or get a simple practice pad.  If you are in between you can always pick up a single snare drum and add to your drum set once you find that you love drums or get paid.

Another great idea is finding a drum set second hand.  My first drum set I picked up was off of Craig’s List for a 10th of what you would normally pay.  Also this drummer may know of how to get a hold of good deals.  Be creative with the process.  Some of the other items you will want to consider picking up are drum sticks and even a drum throne to sit on.   Now assuming that you have everything you need, I want to move on and talk about getting started.

Good Habits For Your Drum Lessons

Before we get started talking about how to play the drums, it is a good idea to discuss frequency.  Get out a calendar if you have to and set that schedule.  I would recommend at least three to four times a week for 30 minutes to an hour.  This will be the most beneficial and you will see maximum results.

Another crucial habit to have is to make sure you use correct posture while positioning yourself in front of the practice pad or drum set.  Stretching is always recommended as well!  Drum injuries can be serious and you may need time to heal from an injury.  It is always better to be safe than sorry.

The Importance of Buying a Metronome

MetronomeA metronome is one of the most simple gadgets you can pickup on the market from 10 dollars and up.  It holds a consistent beat so you can follow along with playing your music.  You can adjust the beat per minute or BPM to go with the piece of music that you are playing.  My main question is, why are most artists overlooking the use of metronomes?  I even overlooked the purchase of mine until a year after learning to play.

So we can all admit that there is nothing sexy about a metronome and we can spend our money on other items.  The one thing we overlook though is our own emotions once we start playing a piece of music.  Sometimes we will speed up and slow down without even intentionally noticing.  I would also have problems following my band instructor before I started using a metronome.  Lets take a deeper look at the different types of metronomes on the market and some other solutions if you are on a very tight budget.

What type of Metronome Works for You?

You will find a few different types of metronomes on the market, the cheapest one being digital.  The digital metronome will make a clicking sound through a small speaker and usually will have some type of knob on it.  The know will adjust the BPM or the tempo you start off with.  Digital metronomes can be very cheap or very expensive based on how much you want to spend.  There really isn’t a reason to spend more than 40 bucks on a metronome.  The metronome is just to keep tempo and will easily fit in your pocket or music bag.

After you purchase a metronome, how fast should you play?  Well I would always start at one of the lowest BPM settings and work your way up.  When you are learning a new piece of music it usually isn’t a rush.  I find it harder to learn a new piece of sheet music if I start at a fast tempo and then slow it down.  If you are getting private music lessons, it is always a good idea to take your metronome with you.

Final Thoughts on Getting a Metronome Today

So if for some reason you just can’t afford a metronome or you need something while you wait for your order off the internet, don’t worry.  You can find a video off of the internet with specific BPM to play with.  We have included one for you at a lower BPM.  So there really is no excuse to not pick one up or follow a long with the video.

Metronomes have been used for centuries now and there is a reason why.  The are essential to learning regardless of how good you are.  I have been playing the trombone for a little over 8 years now and still follow along and so should you.  If you have any questions about a good resource to picking one up, leave a comment below.  Also you can reach us on our contact page above.

The Benefits of Music in Our Lives

Benefits of musicEach day I interact with music even if it is on a subconscious level.  It helps me in so many different ways and can alter my mood in just a few minutes of a good song.  If I feel angry I will listen to some heavy metal or rap music.  It varies from day to day but the best part of music is how relaxed it makes me feel.  Not only does music have influence over your mood, it also has health benefits that have been proven as well.

Music and Relaxing Music

Mediation has been one of the most important things in my life to help me find relaxation and inner peace in my life.  I usually meditate at the same time of day and listen to a very simple melody while wearing headphones.  It is one of the cheapest solutions to letting go of that unwanted tension.  If you decide to meditate, make sure to do it on a regular basis to see maximum results.

There have been studies done on people that listen to relaxing music everyday.  Most of the patients that listened at least 30 minutes a day saw their blood pressure drop significantly.  Just like the patients that saw a reduction in blood pressure, the same patients had improved memory performance when tested.

Since meditating everyday, I have been a more productive person.  With mental clarity I have found that it helps me when I practice my instrument or study for school.  A less cluttered mind has given me a sense of accomplishment and I am more in the moment with my music.

If you feel sad or even suffer from depression, I recommend taking a moment and listen to your favorite music.  Something that is upbeat and positive will help you with cheer up.  It only takes a moment to start feeling better and you can do it by going online or listening to the radio.

A huge benefit is that it will help your sleep patterns and with deeper sleep.  Listening to relaxing music has shown that it helps listeners fall asleep more quickly.  This is because of the altered brain wave state it puts you in.  Also, the monitored insomniacs while listening to peaceful music and found that it helped regulate their sleep as well.  I can also state that I have had much better sleep since listening to restful music before bed.
